Momentum is already mounting in Congress for a real, independent investigation into the president's illegal wiretapping program. But unless Congress knows that citizens are concerned, they'll shrink from their responsibility to act as a check on the president's power.

Michael Lerner
Left Hand of God: Taking Back Our Country from the Religious Right
Michael Lerner talks about The Left Hand of God: Taking Back Our Country From the Religious Right ($24.95). To succeed again, Lerner asserts, the Democratic Party (or just register Green) will have to rethink (just thinking might also work) its relationship to God, spirituality, and a wide range of moral and ethical issues that are of paramount importance to a majority of Americans. Lerner provides a detailed 8-point covenant that serves as an action plan.

RUTH GROUP Speaker Series
Elizabeth de la Vega:
The Criminal Case against Bush Inc.
Sausalito Cruising Club (Bridgeway at the foot of Napa St.)
Whether it was the fraudulent case for the Iraq war, the flagrantly illegal eavesdropping conducted against American citizens under the figleaf of national security, or the potentially life-threatening outing of a CIA operative for political gains, most of us understand why the actions of the Bush administration were profoundly immoral. But do we know -- really know -- why they were illegal? That is the case we will have to make to the broader American public if we are to have a chance at restoring democracy in this country.
Former federal prosecutor Elizabeth de la Vega, who has written a blistering series of indictments for The Nation and Tomdispatch , is coming to us with one, crystal-clear message: Arm Yourselves! Whether you advocate impeachment, or actions in the courts, or bringing in a special prosecutor, you need to be persuasive. The odious misdeeds of Bush Incorporated violate core principles, embedded in the Constitution and the U.S. legal code, upon which this country was founded and which most Americans hold dear. The current government is in the throes of a legitimation crisis: people are not falling for the same old song-and-dance anymore. But the walls will not come tumbling down unless we in the grassroots light the fuse. Now's the time to prepare that elevator speech: come join us -- and also hear Elizabeth's latest analysis of why Special Prosecutor Paul Fitzgerald has a real shot at bringing down Karl Rove!
